Why Berluti Leather Is Unlike Any Other

Berluti is one of the last Parisian maisons to master the art of patine — a centuries-old hand-coloring technique that gives each pair its unique, luminous depth. The leather used, primarily Venezia calfskin, is exceptionally fine and responsive to care. This also means it rewards careful maintenance and punishes neglect.

Whether you've just acquired a pre-owned pair from KAMLUX's Berluti collection or you're protecting a long-standing investment, this guide covers everything you need.

What You'll Need

• A soft horsehair brush (Berluti's own is excellent, but any fine-bristle brush works)
• Unscented, colorless leather conditioner (e.g., Saphir Renovateur)
• A soft cotton or microfibre cloth
• Berluti Jade cream or a tinted wax matching your shoe's color (for patina upkeep)
• Wooden shoe trees (cedar is ideal)
• Suede brush for suede finishes

Step 1: Insert Shoe Trees After Every Wear

Berluti's Venezia leather is supple and can crease deeply if left without support. Insert cedar shoe trees immediately after wearing — they absorb moisture, maintain the last shape, and prevent toe-box creasing. This single habit extends the life of a pair by years.

Step 2: Brush Away Surface Dust

Before any product application, use a soft horsehair brush to sweep away dust and loose dirt in circular motions. This prevents particles from being worked into the leather during conditioning.

Step 3: Condition the Leather

Apply a small amount of leather conditioner (Saphir Renovateur is the gold standard) using a soft cloth, working in gentle circular motions. Pay extra attention to flex points around the toe box and heel counter. Allow to absorb for 10–15 minutes, then buff lightly.

Important: Avoid silicone-based products. They seal the leather's surface and, over time, destroy the patina Berluti is famous for.

Step 4: Maintain the Patina

The patina is the soul of a Berluti shoe. To refresh it:

• Apply Berluti Jade cream in light coats using a cloth, in the direction of the grain
• Allow each coat to dry before applying the next — build depth gradually
• Finish with a gentle buff using a clean horsehair brush to revive the sheen
• For deeper patina restoration, consider visiting a professional cordwainer or Berluti's own care service

Step 5: Protect Against Rain and Humidity

Apply a light protective spray (water-based, wax-free) before wearing in uncertain weather. If your Berlutis do get wet, stuff them loosely with newspaper and allow to dry naturally away from any heat source. Never use a hairdryer or radiator — rapid drying cracks the leather irreversibly.

Step 6: Proper Storage

• Store in their original flannel dust bags inside the box, or in individual cotton bags
• Keep away from direct sunlight, which fades the patina
• Maintain shoe trees in storage to preserve shape
• Rotate pairs: the leather needs rest between wears

Special Note on Suede Finishes

Some Berluti styles feature suede or nubuck panels. For these, use a suede brush (never a horsehair brush) and a suede eraser for scuffs. Avoid conditioners on suede — use a suede-specific protective spray instead.
